Grab a slice (or three) and go
Located along the busy thoroughfare in Creve Coeur that is Olive Boulevard, Jet's Pizza® drew me in some time ago with a lighted sign in the window, like a beacon, that advertised slices available all day.

Here in the Midwest, this is more the exception than the rule, as individual slices are not typically available in the St. Louis area at either a franchise such as this, or a mom and pop pizza joint.

"Life is short. Eat better pizza."

Eugene Jetts and his brother John Jetts opened the first Jet’s Pizza in 1978 in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Fourteen years later, they formed a partnership with business partners Jim Galloway, Jr. and Jeff Galloway. Since then, it has rapidly risen through the ranks to become the twelfth largest pizza chain in the nation, by sales (PMQ, 2016), with over 400 locations and plans for rapid future growth.

A taste of home
Though I moved around quite a bit in my youth (yute) with an Air Force dad, I settled on Long Island, New York for over two decades. Since being back in Missouri, I've been hard pressed to find slices that are so similar to Sicilian slices on the east coast. Jet's delivers on this concept, with their signature deep-dish square pizza (pun intended).

My review is actually based on several visits over the last two years or so, as my first time here was when this blog was a mere pizza craving...

Typically visiting during a lunch break, parking is always plentiful at this location. Starting a row of a long strip of stores and eateries, the parking lot directly in front of the store or the one located in the neighboring strip always offers a spot.

It's an order and sit type place and though the interior is relatively small, a recent addition has been a few metal, mesh type outdoor tables. I'm not certain if this is a permanent addition, but it's nice to be able to take a seat and wait inside while watching the large mounted TV to pass the time.

With the rapidly changing weather patterns in this area leading to unexpected warmer, sunny days, even in the middle of winter, I'll always choose the outdoor option when possible. There are usually a few outdoor tables present on their small front porch area year round.

I haven't yet encountered an employee that hasn't been friendly and though the checkout part is always efficient, the receiving my order at lunchtime part isn't always so quick. I've learned that calling ahead to order, or asking them to heat it lightly, is the best option, as it enables me to enjoy my pizza at my own pace - especially during said hectic lunch hour.

Jet's offers a couple of lunch specials, my favorite of which is the two slice combo + a drink.

So, how's the pizza?

In a word, it's fantastic!

The way their deep-dish pies are constructed, in a large rectangle and cut into eight smaller rectangles, you always get an outside edge. It's crispy; just the right amount of greasy, pillowy, cheesy, saucy, warm and satisfying. My typical order of two slices is one cheese and one sausage. The Italian sausage is the sweet variety, balanced with a tasty saltiness.

It's not overly sauced and the balance of perfectly browned mozzarella (the magic word in my book) and toppings is always spot on. The hard bake on the bottom, combined with the softness throughout is simply a wonderful combination.

I'm one of those people that usually photographs my food, much to the amusement of my mother, who often tells me, "Nobody wants to see what you're eating."

"But ma, " I say, "Yes, they do!" And Instagram proves me right every time.

What are my options?
As is typical, you can choose what you want a la carte and build your own square pizza, or go with a Philly Cheese Steak, BLT or the Buffalo Ranch Chicken, among a dozen or so other pre-fab options. For a smaller appetite, you can grab a Four Corner pizza®.

If you opt for a New York style thin crust, you can even Flavorize Your Crust For Free®:

  • Butter
  • Poppy seed
  • Parmesan
  • Garlic
  • Sesame seed
  • Cajun
  • Romano
  • Jet's Turbo crust®

Though I haven't tried them yet, Jetzees® and Boats are on my radar. Check them out.

TIP: Looking for gluten-free? Jet's offers an option just for you.
